National program

The National Growth Fund Program for Solar PV aims to address pressing challenges by rapidly establishing a robust and diverse solar PV manufacturing industry in the Netherlands, focused on both domestic and export markets. This initiative is built on a strategic choice of three innovative technologies where the Netherlands can excel.

PROGRAM LINE 1

focuses on the development of high-efficiency silicon heterojunction (HJT) cells, which promise greater conversion efficiency than competing technologies like standard PERC cells. We are implementing an innovation program to mature this technology for large-scale production and maintain a leadership position in the market, with plans to establish a HJT cell factory in the Netherlands capable of producing 3 GWp annually.

PROGRAM LINE 2

centers on creating a new flexible, lightweight solar PV technology based on promising perovskite materials. This innovative approach allows for production with a very low carbon footprint and minimal material use. We will establish a pilot production line for perovskite films and collaborate with industrial partners to build a facility with a capacity of 1 GWp per year. These new films will be applicable in many areas where conventional rigid silicon panels cannot be deployed, significantly expanding the potential applications of solar PV in our space-constrained country.

PROGRAM LINE 3

focuses on innovative ways to integrate solar PV into our built environment, vehicles, and infrastructure. This will be done in collaboration with Dutch companies that specialize in producing solar PV modules for non-standard applications. The integrated solar PV products will utilize the two types of solar cells developed in the first two program lines and aim for scaling to multi-GWp per year. Additionally, we will develop tandem solar cells with a conversion efficiency of 35%, surpassing the current record for single-junction silicon or perovskite cells (25-27%). This breakthrough will create a new solar PV technology that generates more energy with less surface area, resulting in significant economic benefits.
